There are times in which we can't or we don't want to precise about a number, time, distance, etc. So we tend to use particular expressions that show that we are not saying the exact number, time, etc.
In the book there are two expressions related to this idea: approximately and a large amount. Both expressions have similar phrases that indicate the same idea.
For example:
I am going to travel in a year or so. or I am going to travel approximately in a year.
(both ideas carry the same meaning)
A great deal of my time is spent checking tests. or A large amount of my time is spent checking tests.
(both ideas carry the same meaning)
